      16mm Model Railway Group

A group associated with the Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers

About the group

The group was founded in 2004 by Martin Cope (he of Roxton & North Ferriby Light Railway fame), and aims to encourage those who are actively engaged in or who have an interest in the art of modelling items of railway locomotives, rolling stock, track, signalling, and other railway infrastructure to the scale of 16mm to each imperial foot, or, to put it more simply to a scale of 1/19th the size of the prototype.

There are currently no membership fees payable in order to join or to be a member the of group, just an interest in the art of modelling in 16mm:1ft is all that is required.

Our members, who come from as far apart as Cleethorpes, York, and Scarborough, currently have a range of layouts, some of which are indoors, but most of which are set in our members' respective gardens.

Although a working track gauge of 32mm is the most common one amongst our membership, we do have members who are able to offer running facilities for 45mm gauge locomotives and vehicles.

Providing you are a member of the Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers, it does not matter what type of locomotive you own, whether live steam or diesel outline, you will always be welcome to run it on at any of our events, unless specifically stated by the host who is holding the event.

In our efforts to encourage newcomers and additional interest to modelling in this scale, the group attends exhibitions whenever possible, and to this end, a portable layout which is jointly owned by several of our members can be used as a test track for both 32mm and 45mm gauged vehicles.

Group Members - Ian Armstrong, Keith Topham & Steve Green are seen here with the 32mm & 45mm Gauge test track in October 2006

During spring and summer months, the group usually meets on the first Monday of each month, except Bank Holidays, for a running session at one of our member's railways somewhere within the area. The Monday meetings are now supplemented by extra mid-monthly meetings at the railways of our members who tend to live further a field.  A detailed list of these meetings together with contact information needed before your visit can be found on our 'Forthcoming Events' page.

We normally hold a meeting during the latter part of the year to arrange the following season's outdoor running sessions.

It is also hoped that the indoor layout shown above will be updated and enhanced in the near future.  This should enable more winter events to be held in the warm and create a more suitable standard for the layout to be available for future exhibitions.

All that remains for us to say now is, that no matter who you are, where you live in our region or whether you are just visiting, whatever you run in 16mm, or indeed whatever the aspect of railway modelling is that interests you, please feel free to attend one of our events  --

You will always be made very welcome!
